Biography / Background

BIOGRAPHY

Nguyen Thi Mai Huong is an Assoc. Professor of Education. She is teaching at Hanoi National University of Education (HNUE). She obtained her master's degree in English linguistics from the University of Foreign Languages and International Studies. As a consequence of her involvement in teacher education and observations of how teacher training works in developed countries through ongoing professional development courses at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada and Bell Cambridge, UK she has developed a passion for guiding and assisting Vietnamese teachers and a keen interest in teacher learning. In 2011 she went to the UK to pursue a PhD in the field of teacher education at the University of Nottingham, UK. 

Working at HNUE she has gained wide-ranging experience of teaching both English as a foreign language to English majors and English language teaching methodology to pre-service and in-service teachers. Apart from teaching undergraduates at HNUE, where she is based, she also participates in teaching MA courses for Hanoi University (Vietnam), Victoria University (Australia) and Hanoi University of Foreign Languages and International Studies (Vietnam). Additionally, whilst working with the World University Service of Canada (WUSC), she had the privilege of leading professional development workshops for English teachers in Vietnam.

Her research interests stem from the desire to contribute to English teacher education in Vietnam including ELT methodology, English teacher education and professional teacher development.

Ms. Huong’s research interests stem from the desire to contribute to English teacher education in Vietnam including

- English Language Teaching Methodology;

- Teaching English to Young Learners;

- Psychology for English Teaching;

- Teacher Professional Development;

- Research Methods in Education.

Taking charge of training section in WUSC office as a head teacher, organizing and facilitating workshops/ training sessions for English teachers oat various universities in Vietnam. This includes:


  • Designing themes/ content for workshops based on participants’ needs;
  • Inviting presenters for workshops and looking after contents of their presentations;
  • Facilitating workshops together with a Canadian trainer;
  • Contacting participants from different universities and maintaining a network of teachers throughout Vietnam;
  • Contacting host universities and following up with them to ensure the efficient organization of workshops;
  • Preparing all the necessary inputs to workshops including agendas and materials. 


Work with Clic (Canadian Language and Information Center), which is part of WUSC. This includes:

  • Designing curriculums and syllabuses for courses;
  • Interviewing teachers of English from universities in Vietnam for a training course in Canada;
  • Preparing pre-departure cross-cultural orientations for selected teachers of English.


September 2004 – September 2005:  Assistant Head Teacher (World University Service of Canada)


Assist the Canadian head teacher in all related aspects to support Vietnamese language teachers including:

  • Contacting and coordinating presenters for workshops;
  • Developing agendas for workshops and training sessions;
  • Reviewing professional sources (journals, reference books, internet) to find articles and information;
  • Maintaining email distribution list and network of teachers throughout Vietnam;
  • Contacting partners re logistics for workshops and training sessions;
  • Delivering presentations and/or facilitating sessions at workshops;
  • Carrying out periodic evaluations to determine results of the workshop/training programs;
  • Advising the head teacher on Vietnamese sensibility and understanding.
  • Translating inputs and interpreting at presentations;
  • Writing reports of workshops for submission to the regional director;
